Innovative Composting Program

San Francisco has set up what looks like a fully sustainable and self-perpetuating municipal composting system.  How does it work?  The organic waste from over 2,000 restaurants is placed in a compost pile.  The compost goes to feed veggies and fruits produced by local farmers.  The restaurants then buy the produce and products from these local farms and other merchants.  Then the restaurants collect the scraps, compost ‘em, and so on!  Check out more about this project at the TreeHugger website

I’m a San Francisco resident, and I’d like to point out that not only restaurants but over 60,000 (as of 2001) households & apartment buildings can put food scraps & yard trimmings in “green bins” for curbside pickup, just like trash & recycling pickup, but at no charge. Residential & restaurant scraps are then trucked to a facility for composting and sale.
