Want to reduce trash in landfills? Start composting.
Some Ohio residents are unhappy about new landfill construction in their area, but they haven’t had much luck preventing it.
The state senator writing the article mentions that people should start composting and recycling more to prevent garbage from going into the landfill in the first place.
Muncipal composting is something thatĀ isn’t mentioned, but should be! If we composted more on a national basis, it would reduce landfill usage and improve soil at the same time.
But the reality is, as long as we continue to dispose of our garbage, we must have a place to put it. Current laws require stringent testing before a new landfill is approved. Landfills cannot be located over sole-source aquifers that provide drinking water.
We are all part of creating a nuisance for anyone who lives around a landfill. Take a good look in your garbage bag the next time you take it to the curb. What is in there that could be recycled or composted? If you are sympathetic to these residents like I am, start recycling.
